TB and RPR Results

Purpose

Recovery Works serves a population at increased risk for Tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted diseases and provide appropriate screening and assessment for communicable diseases as part of it’s mission to treat those suffering from addiction.

Policy

At the time of admission, a screening and assessment will be performed for the presence of Signs and Symptoms of TB or other communicable diseases, which will include a minimum of a TB test and RPR to be performed by a licensed medical professional, the results of which will be kept in the clients file.

Procedures

  1. Prior to arrival client should obtain a TB test.

  2. If negative results within the last 6 months cannot be produced TB skin test will be performed at the time of arrival and read in 72 hours.

  3. The time and date of the initial skin test will be recorded and the results check by a health professional after 72 hours.

  4. Sometimes a person may have a positive skin reaction but does not have TB. A “proof of positive skin test” is acceptable with appropriate documentation that the client has been TB treated in the past, or does not have TB.

  5. If it is medically determined that a person has tuberculosis, Recovery Works staff will work with the reporting medical office or clinic and other agencies, to ensure that the person with TB is sent to a facility that can address TB as well as drug addiction.

  6. An RPR test will be performed at the time of physical assessment

  7. Positive results which require reporting to local health agencies will be coordinated

  8. The Client will be educated on the diseases, methods of transmissions, and future risks.

  9. The results of both tests are noted on the physical assessment form.

  10. These tests must be performed and read by qualified medical personnel.
